We highly recommend Ivan & the St Kilda Plastering National team for solid plastering and restoration/ repair of heritage buildings. Ivan repaired the external render on our 1886 Victorian house. He was able to repair some damage to large walls whereas other St Kilda plasterers told us we needed to replace render to the whole wall. He has the skills and training in traditional techniques we were looking for. Nothing was too much trouble and he is extremely tidy and polite and helpful. We would not hesitate to use him again or to recommend him.

We have recently had the pleasure of having Ivan work on our ninety-seven year old Californian bungalow in St Kilda. The job was to repair the original lathe-and-plaster walls in a large room - Ivan was sympathetic to our values of having the walls made neat and tidy, solid, ready for the next hundred years. He also understood that we were interested in the process and explained and demonstrated each step along the way. The result is wonderful. There is no escaping the fact that lathe-and-plaster work creates mess and dust - but the care Ivan took with covers and sheets meant this was kept to a minimum. A very hard worker, exceptionally skilled, a delight to have around, we are happy to recommend Ivan's services.

What a joy it was to see the team work their magic on the damaged, broken and missing pieces of plaster work on the facade of our 130 year-old St Kilda home. He carefully and expertly rebuilt features back to their original form using traditional techniques and natural materials. A skilled craftsman, he is also approachable, patient, consultative and friendly. We are delighted with the result. Plastering National surpassed our expectations on all fronts and we could not commend them more highly.

After having an extension put onto the front of our St Kilda house, Ivan came and rendered the brick and blue board. He blended in the old and new seamlessly, completely covering the brick so no shape shows through. He works quickly and very cleanly. We highly recommend Ivan and the team. Job completed and I am happy!

Ivan and the team were great to deal with. They did a wonderful and very reasonably priced job. They started and finished on time even though we added a few extra things.
I had quite extensive damage to 3 walls which had required the house to be underpined. The walls now look like new and you would never know that there had been any damage. Exceptional customer service!

I am pleased to write this recommendation for the Plastering National team. We gave the team a variety of challenges to repair considerable damage to our 19th Century terrace in St Kilda. Ivan accepted all with professionalism, confidence and, even, enthusiasm. He has done all he said he would, and was at all times thoughtful, punctual and courteous. Such a great job!

After receiving his reasonably priced quote, he was a pleasure to deal with and went above and beyond to deliver. We couldn’t be more happy with how his work turned out. I would definitely recommend Ivan.

Plastering FAQ & How It Works

Plaster repair, installation, and maintenance in St Kilda can be complex for those who are unfamiliar with the necessary materials and tools. Expert paint and plastering experts like those you’ll hire at Plastering National in St Kilda know all of the tricks of the trade and have a streamlined process that makes even those most challenging plaster projects a breeze.

Plaster is typically made up of gypsum, lime plaster, or cement mixed with water and sand. The lime plaster is typically manufactured as a dry powder and then worked into a stiff paste before application in St Kilda by mixing in water.

So how do you know if a St Kilda plasterer is a right professional for you? A plasterer will be able to provide a smooth surface, whether on walls, ceilings or partitions, for either functional or decorative purposes. A plasterer will also be able to perform the following tasks:

    • Apply coats of lime plaster: Plastering specialists will apply plaster to interior walls and partitions, using hand tools, portable power tools or a combination of the two.
    • Create decorative textures: St Kilda plasterers can create textures and decorative patterns for an ornate finish.
    • Clean and prepare surfaces: Plastering specialists will prepare surfaces for plastering by thoroughly cleaning them and fixing any cracks or chips found. They will also create the mortar mix, ready for application.

The time is takes to plaster a room depends on what’s required, and on the size of the room. We can give you an estimated completion time when we come and look at the job and provide a quote.

Generally, it will take around 3-5 days for plastering to dry out however there are a few factors that will affect the drying time of your plaster. The thickness of the plastering will affect the time it takes for the plaster to dry out. If there are any areas that require additional work, for example, if there is a void, a large crack, or a gap which requires filling then a base coat or bonding plaster may be required before skimming. This means that certain areas may be thicker than others and therefore require more time for the plaster to thoroughly dry out. If there has been significant filling it could take as long as two weeks for the plaster to be thoroughly dry and ready for painting and decorating. Another factor that will affect the drying time for your plastering work is the room temperature and ventilation. It can be tempting to turn the heating right up to speed up the drying process but this is not recommended. Excessive heat will cause the plaster to dry too quickly which may result in cracking or hazing. The best condition for allowing your newly plastered walls/ceiling to dry is to provide some ventilation by opening a couple of windows slightly. You can put the heating on, however, we recommend you keep this at a low temperature for a number of days after the plastering is completed. This will help with the drying process whilst avoiding the plaster cracking.

Gyprock is a brand name for plasterboard, sometimes known as gypsum board. Gyprock panels are made by sandwiching a layer of gypsum plaster between two sheets of felt paper. Once the gypsum is set, it creates a solid panel which is then fixed to a stud wall.

    Setup and security

As with all painting, repair, and refinishing projects, our Plastering National St Kilda experts begin by protecting themselves and other objects in the room from harm. This step involves the use of painter's tape, drop cloths, and other materials. Technicians may also clean walls and set up plaster, tools, and paint during this initial prep stage to ensure the project runs smoothly.

    Removal of Damaged Plaster

The first and most important step in plaster repair is to remove any damaged or worn plaster. Our local technicians near you focus on areas that have cracked, crumbled, or been flooded.

    Surface Preparation, Smoothing, and Patching

If necessary, our St Kilda technicians may sand the plaster's edges or cracks to create smooth surfaces. Using a putty knife, our experts will apply thin layers of plaster to cracks at this stage. For holes caused by damaged plaster, they will repair any damage to the underlying lath and apply a latex bonding agent to the entire area if necessary.

    Install Plaster Repair Layers

For larger holes in plaster walls and other surfaces, our St Kilda technicians use two layers of plaster to restore structural integrity. Most painting and plastering estimates include the cost of materials as well as the time required for two layers of plaster to set and dry.

    Painting and Sanding

After our St Kilda technicians have applied and cured all layers of plaster, the surface of the plaster is sanded down. This procedure aids in the creation of even surfaces that are ready for primer and paint coats. Our technicians provide expert advice and primer and paint selections as part of our painting and wall plastering services, allowing you to achieve a fantastic finished product that will last for years.

Other steps may be required to achieve a professional finished product depending on your plaster needs or the types of damage that need to be repaired. Contact your local St Kilda plastering service today to learn more about the plaster repair and installation process.
